{"id":106,"date":"2015-10-22T14:39:17","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T18:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/?p=106"},"modified":"2015-10-22T14:39:17","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T18:39:17","slug":"tick-tick-tick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/?p=106","title":{"rendered":"Tick, Tick, Tick&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The room was not large, just a conference room in the library where ten of us sat around a table writing.\u00a0 It was a typical Saturday morning workshop and the prompt was part of the lyrics to the Star Wars theme.\u00a0 The music rattled around my brain easily enough but for some reason I couldn&#8217;t recall it ever having lyrics.\u00a0 I was frustrated.\u00a0 I drew a blank while everyone else was scribbling away&#8230;and the music in my head became louder, incessant&#8230;persistent&#8230;..maddening!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/tick-tick-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-109 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/tick-tick-02-173x300.jpg\" alt=\"tick-tick-02\" width=\"321\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/tick-tick-02-173x300.jpg 173w, http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/tick-tick-02-591x1024.jpg 591w, http:\/\/sallemander.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/tick-tick-02.jpg 1077w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It suddenly stopped when a new sound caught my attention.\u00a0 It was coming from Keith at the other end of the table.\u00a0 There was a tick, tick, ticking that quickly replaced my obsession &#8211; in perfect rhythm and beat &#8211; to those lyrics, whatever they were&#8230;tick, tick, ticka, ticka-ticka, tick, tick.\u00a0 I was tapping my toe on the carpet now&#8230;ticka-ticka, tick, tick.\u00a0 Louder and louder it got, tick, ticka, tick&#8230;Keith was writing intensely.\u00a0 Tick, tick-ticka.\u00a0 How could he not hear it?\u00a0 Tick-tick, ticka-tick.\u00a0\u00a0 Was I the only one?\u00a0 Ticka-tick-ticka, tick.\u00a0 Was that smoke coming out of his ears?\u00a0 Tick-tick.\u00a0 Coooool!\u00a0 Ticka-tick-ticka.\u00a0 The ticking got faster as bright beams of light began to emerge from his skull. \u00a0Tick-ticka-ticka-ticka-tick.\u00a0 It filled the room&#8230;blinding me&#8230;..ticka-ticka-ticka&#8230;<strong>BANG!!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Like a mouse in a microwave, the walls, floor and ceiling were suddenly pasted with Keith juice and bits of sticky flesh and bone.<\/p>\n<p>Still, nobody seemed to notice.\u00a0 Everyone just kept on writing even as a slippery chunk of bowel slid down Carl&#8217;s face and a bloody ear clung to the end of Joe&#8217;s pencil.\u00a0 Keith&#8217;s head and chest were gone and his fluids were squirting Susan&#8217;s cheek&#8230;but he kept on writing as well.\u00a0 Susan paused to open an umbrella and brush gore off her laptop, unmoved.<\/p>\n<p>Everything was quiet for a few minutes as pens scribbled on wet paper and blood dribbled and pooled in my under shorts&#8230;.then the ticking started again&#8230;but this time it sounded like it was coming from Nancy&#8230;..tick, tick, tick&#8230;coooool!<\/p>\n<p><em>***The illustration was originally published as the cover for Analog Magazine&#8217;s Jan\/Feb 2012 issue, for a story by Robert J Sawyer.\u00a0 -Marsha<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The room was not large, just a conference room in the library where ten of us sat around a table writing.\u00a0 It was a typical Saturday morning workshop and the prompt was part of the lyrics to the Star Wars theme.\u00a0 The music rattled around my brain easily enough but for some reason I couldn&#8217;t &hellip;
